asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his latest estimate of the number of people presently subscribing to private medical insurance.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

It is estimated that at the end of 1983 there were just over 2 million subscribers to private medical insurance schemes, and that about 4.5 million people were covered, in the United Kingdom.
