HC Deb 28 February 1984 vol 55 cc136-7W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the total estimated gross turnover on the United Kingdom continental shelf activities of companies holding oil and gas production and exploration licences and of exploration contractors for each year from 1979 to date.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The gross turnover of companies classified to class 13 of the standard industrial classification—the exploration for and the extraction of oil and natural gas—from 1979 to 1982, together with the latest estimates available for 1983, is given below:

£ million
1979 6,381
1980 9,764
1981 13,567
1982 15,875
*1983 13,515
* January-September.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the net value of contracts placed for North sea oil and gas-related work for each year since 1979, together with the percentage in each case that British firms won in each of those years.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The information is as follows:

Year Total value of orders placed United Kingdon share United Kingdom per cent, share
£m £m
1979 2,679 2,111 79
1980 2,380 1,679 71
1981 2,911 1,943 67
1982 2,264 1,643 73

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will estimate the net value of oil and gas reserves in the North sea to date at 1984 prices, projections for each year up to 1990 at current prices and the percentage uplift of oil that the British National Oil Corporation has taken of the total production of each North sea oilfield in each year since the agreements were formalised.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

No such estimates can be provided of the net current value of North sea oil and gas reserves since to do so requires detailed knowledge of the
