Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the total volume of gas consumed in the United Kingdom in each of the last three years.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The figures for consumption of natural gas, measured in therms, were as follows, on a primary fuel input basis:

1982 17,930
1983 *18,390
* Provisional.

Note: 1 million therms are approximately equivalent to 2.75 million cubic metres of natural gas or to 4,000 tonnes of coal.
