HC Deb 28 February 1984 vol 55 c162W
70. Mr. Dickens

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps his Department has taken to help men aged over 60 years who face early retirement.

Dr. Boyson

Men aged 60 or over who are not working can now qualify for automatic national insurance credits to protect entitlement to basic retirement pension and other benefits. From 30 May 1983 we introduced a provision whereby if they claim supplementary benefit they are entitled to the higher long term scale rate.
