§ Mr. MellorThe latest information is published in table 7.1 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1982"—Cmnd. 9048.
§ Mr. Ashleyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to the reply of 13 February, Official Report, columns 9–12, approximately how many of the annual 1,900 representations alleging wrongful conviction are made by people who received a custodial penalty; and in what proportion of these cases the complaint is concerned with the forensic evidence that was presented at the trial.
§ Mr. BrittanThe sample survey from which the figure of 1,900 was derived suggests that the number of representations alleging wrongful conviction in cases where a custodial penalty was imposed is around 700 a year. The survey provided no basis for estimating the proportion of cases in which the complaint is concerned with forensic science evidence.
