asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will tabulate for each of the 10 years preceding the latest convenient date the number of buildings statutorily listed as being of architectural or historic interest in Scotland and its islands, the numbers of these which have been demolished with the consent of the local authority, the number of these which have been demolished with the consent of the Secretary of State after appeal against refusal by the local authority, and the number which have been illegally demolished.

The numbers of items in the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest in Scotland are available on a yearly basis from 1979 only. (Items may include more than one building).

The number of applications notified to the Secretary of State where the planning authority was disposed to consent to demolition or partial demolition and where the Secretary of State did not dissent is shown as follows. Information is available only from 1980.

In the period from 1980 the Secretary of State granted consent for the demolition of a listed building following appeal in two cases, both in 1983, and both have been demolished.

No figures are available on the numbers of listed buildings illegally demolished.
