HC Deb 27 February 1984 vol 55 cc6-7W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether the Government are prepared to invoke article 36 of the Treaty of Rome to impose restrictions on imports of goods vehicles to the extent required to ensure the maintenance of vehicle-building capacity required in time for war.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

No. In current circumstances an import prohibition of the type envisaged could not be justified under article 36 of the Treaty of Rome.
