§ Mr. Austin Mitchellasked the Secretary of State for Employment to what extent the figures for the increase in male earnings in manufacturing take account of changes in the number of jobs available to those aged less than 21 years; and if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the effect of these changes on the index.
§ Mr. Alan ClarkNo official figures are published of the increase in average earnings of all male employees in manufacturing. The available figures relate to full-time652W manual and non-manual employees aged 21 and over—in the report of the "New Earnings Survey 1983", part A, tables 4 and 5—and to full-time manual employees on adult rates—in the report on the October 1983 survey of manual earnings in Employment Gazette, February 1984, page 47. Both of these publications are available in the Library.
The information available from the monthly survey on which the index of average earnings is based does not enable the effect of changes in particular categories of job such as those available to males aged under 21 to be distinguished.
