HC Deb 23 February 1984 vol 54 cc585-6W
Mr. Hargreaves

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will extend the concessionary 5p television licence regulations to sheltered accommodation which is managed by private estate management.

Mr. Hargreaves

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what would be the cost of extending the 5p concessionary television licence to those living in sheltered accommodation provided by private estate management.

Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent representations he has received regarding the extension of concessionary television licences to sheltered homes managed by private companies.

Mr. Hurd

An estate management company has recently represented to us that the concessionary 5p licence scheme should be extended to sheltered housing schemes for elderly people which are managed by private companies, and a number of hon. Members later wrote on the same subject. It would not be easy to justify granting the concession to people who live in sheltered accommodation managed by these companies while denying it to pensioners generally. We have not made an estimate of the cost that would be involved.
