Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) how many submarines and surface vessels built for the Royal Navy and foreign and commonwealth navies at his Department's specification at Scott Lithgow and other British shipyards in the past 15 years had, in some degree, to be redesigned or re-equipped because of faulty equipment supplied by outside contractors;

(2) how many submarines and surface vessels built for the Royal Navy and foreign and commonwealth navies at Scott Lithgow and other British shipyards in the past 15 years had, in some degree, to be redesigned or re-equipped as a result of faulty design or specifications for which his Department was responsible;

(3) what has been the estimated cost of rectifying design and specification faults in the construction of vessels constructed for the Royal Navy over the past 15 years;

(4) in how many cases the completion of submarines or surface vessels for the Royal Navy and other navies was delayed for (a) three months, (b) six months, (c) 12 months, (d) 18 months and (e) 24 months, respectively, due to faulty equipment and design for which his Department was responsible;

(5) to what extent the operational capability of the Royal Navy has been impaired during the past 15 years because of the need to correct errors in design and specification of submarines and surface ships commissioned by the Royal Navy.
