HC Deb 23 February 1984 vol 54 cc583-4W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Prime Minister if, arising from the resolution passed by the Assembly of the European Communities over the Nazi war criminal, Rauff, she will consult the President of the United States of America to see what can be done to persuade the Chilean authorities to extradite or expel Rauff from that country.

The Prime Minister

I have every sympathy with the sentiments about Rauff expressed in the resolution of the European Parliament on 16 February. It is deplorable that he should still be living comfortably in Chile.

We shall be considering with the appropriate authorities in the United States of America what further steps might be taken to bring him to justice.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Prime Minister if she will consult the heads of Governments of the other European Community countries over steps to be taken for the Nazi industries for the years 1979 and 1982—the latest for which figures are available. Estimated total Ministry of Defence purchases for financial years 1979–80 and 1982–83 are shown in brackets for comparison. Ministry of Defence purchases of fuel, food, clothing and other items from a wide range of industries amounted to £940 million in 1979–80 and £1,640 million in 1982–83. Figures to cover the period from 1954 are not not available on a comparable basis.

war criminal, Rauff, to be brought to justice arising from the resolution passed by the Assembly of the European Communities; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany have responsibility for bringing war criminals such as Rauff to justice. Our own position remains that we would respond sympathetically to any requests for assistance from the Germans in this matter. We would, accordingly, be prepared to discuss Rauff's case with our European Community partners within the framework of European political co-operation.
