§ Mr. Hurd[pursuant to his reply, 16 January 1984, c. 66]: The information available is not in the precise form requested by the hon. Member. During the financial year 1982–83 the average weekly costs of keeping a prisoner in custody in the following categories were:

B and C) 205 Local prisons and remand centres 200 Open prisons 158 Borstals and YP centres (including open borstals) 231 Detention centres 211 All-female establishments 308 The average weekly cost for all establishments was £218. The majority of these costs related to staff costs in establishments.
