HC Deb 23 February 1984 vol 54 c634W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the instances of animals having samples or blood tests checked in Department of Health and Social Security laboratories; which districts are involved; whether the practice is still continuing; if he will take steps to ensure these tests are ended; what has been the cost to the National Health Service of such tests and whether any charge will be made for them; and what instructions have been issued to health authorities on this matter and what response he has received from them.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The powers to supply services of this kind in NHS hospitals are provided in section 58 of the National Health Service Act 1977. Although details of such tests are not held centrally, indications are that this is a limited service and in no way detrimental to normal patient care. Where such services are provided I would expect them to be properly costed and charged for.
