HC Deb 22 February 1984 vol 54 c556W
19. Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the present situation concerning the contact group's efforts to assist progress towards an internationally recognised Namibia.

Mr. Rifkind

There were talks last week in Lusaka between South Africa, Angola and the United States about the disengagement of South African forces from Angola. The three Governments involved agreed that that meeting was a step towards a Namibia settlement. We share this hope. The United States are playing the leading role in these developments. We and our partners in the Contact Group are ready to contribute where we can.
