HC Deb 22 February 1984 vol 54 c557W
22. Mr. Allen McKay

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he was satisfied with the arrangements for the withdrawal of British troops from the Lebanon.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

Yes. The redeployment of the British contingent in the multinational force to the RFA Reliant was conducted with expedition and skill. Our troops remain close at hand.

46. Mr. Douglas

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will have discussions with the Government of Lebanon regarding the safety of United Kingdom citizens in that country.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

We keep in close touch with the Lebanese authorities about the safety of the members of the British community in Lebanon. On 10 February we organised the successful evacuation of 190 British nationals who wished to leave Lebanon, together with 328 nationals of other countries.

9. Mr. Lofthouse

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he is planning any fresh initiatives in the Lebanon.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave earlier today to my hon. Friend the Member for Ilford, South (Mr. Thorne).
