asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the average annual waiting list for hospital treatment in Scotland in each of the past five years.

Information on waiting lists is collected centrally only at 31 March and 30 September each year. The number of patients on waiting lists at 30 September for each of the past five years was as follows:

30 September Number on waiting lists
1979 70,970
1980 67,180
1981 65,024
1982 *86,179
1983 †89,416
Notes:
* Figures for 30 September 1982 are incomplete as total figures were not available for all areas because of NHS industrial action.
