HC Deb 22 February 1984 vol 54 c540W
Mr. Soames

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what percentage of food consumed in the United Kingdom was imported in 1983.

Mrs. Fenner

Complete figures will not be available until later this year but forecasts of the outturn for 1983 suggest that some 48 per cent. of food for consumption in the United Kingdom was imported. The United Kingdom is however a significant exporter of food and agricultural products and imports net of exports account for about 40 per cent. of domestic consumption.
