HC Deb 22 February 1984 vol 54 cc526-7W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Prime Minister whether she will make it the policy of Her Majesty's Government not to agree to any proposals for increasing the power of the European Economic Community Assembly or for reducing the power of the member states to veto proposals in accordance with the formula agreed by President de Gaulle.

The Prime Minister

The European Parliament's powers are laid down in the Community treaties and could be changed only by the unanimous agreement of all members states. We see no need for any increase in the powers of the Parliament.

On majority voting, it remains our policy that where a member state considers its very important interests to be involved the discussions should be continued until unanimous agreement is reached.
