§ Mr. MellorSince the White Paper was published in May 1983 we have received about 2,500 letters offering comments on the proposals contained in it. These comprise 23 from universities and teaching hospitals; 20 from scientific or professional bodies; 19 from companies or trade organisations; 13 from animal welfare groups; 11 from other bodies; 307 from hon. Members; and about 2,000 from members of the general public.
The Government's proposals have been widely welcomed and there is general support for our decision to introduce new legislation as soon as parliamentary time allows.
