asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current provision for training opportunities scheme starts at skillcentres and colleges; how many places in each are currently filled; and what is the planned provision at skillcentres and colleges for 1984–85.

It is estimated that in 1983–84, 28,400 trainees will start courses under the training opportunities scheme in skillcentres, and 42,100 in colleges. Some 9,800 skillcentre places and 17,600 college places were filled at the end of January.

The planned provision under this scheme in 1984–85 is for 25,000 trainees to start courses in skillcentres and 45,100 at colleges.
