HC Deb 21 February 1984 vol 54 cc451-2W
Mr. Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what were the joint export earnings of the textile and clothing industries in each year since 1979.

Mr. Channon

The value of exports of textiles and textile clothing in the years in question is set out in the answer given to the hon. Member for Walthamstow (Mr. Deakins) on 7 February at c.522–23.

Mr. Andrew Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Community partners, he will impose unilateral restraints on disruptive Turkish exports of textile and clothing products, particularly for multi-fibre arrangement categories 4 (T-shirts), 13 (knickers) and 83 (other knitted outerwear) in the absence of the Turkish Government being willing to enter immediately into a voluntary restraint arrangement.

Mr. Channon

I hope that progress will soon be made towards the establishment of a comprehensive voluntary restraint arrangement. Nevertheless, we are carefully monitoring the level of imports from Turkey so that, if there is a surge which threatens damage to our industry, we can immediately request the Commission to take safeguard action.
