HC Deb 21 February 1984 vol 54 cc474-5W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost to United Kingdom public funds incurred by the Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition during his visit to the United States of America.

Mr. Whitney

There was no direct cost to United Kingdom funds incurred by the right hon. Member for Iswyn (Mr. Kinnock). In keeping with normal practice in respect of visits to the United States by senior British public figures, the British embassy in Washington and the British Mission in New York assisted in making arrangements in advance and in looking after the right hon. Member during his stay.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost to public funds of the reception held in the British embassy in the United States of America in honour of the Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition.

Mr. Whitney

No reception was held at the British Embassy. Her Majesty's ambassador gave a dinner in honour of the right hon. Member for Islwyn (Mr. Kinnock) on 9 February, the cost of which was about £500.
