HC Deb 21 February 1984 vol 54 cc485-6W
Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total number of (a) teaching staff and (b) non-teaching staff currently employed by the Inner London education authority.

Mr. Dunn

The latest information available to the Department on total teaching staff employed by the Inner London education authority is for January 1983. Counting part-time staff on the basis of their full-time equivalences there were 33,214 teaching staff reported by the authority as being paid for service. Information on individual authorities' non-teaching staff is not collected by the Department.

Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science by what percentage figure non-teaching staff costs in the Inner London education authority are budgeted to rise in 1984–85; and what is the difference in cost in money terms.

Mr. Dunn

According to figures sent to my right hon. Friend by the leader of the authority, budgeted gross expenditure on non-teaching staff in 1984–85 totals £219.65 million, an increase of approximately £13.2 million—6.4 per cent.—over 1983–84. The figures vary for different parts of the service: for example, expenditure on non-teaching staff in administration and inspection is budgeted to increase by more than 9 per cent.

Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how his estimate of a 25 per cent. increase in school meal costs in the Inner London education authority was arrived at.

Mr. Dunn

Expenditure returns on form RO1 made by the Inner London education authority for the years 1979–80 and 1982–83 include the following figures for expenditure (cash) on school meals and milk:

1979–80 1982–83 Increase
£26.0 million £32.9 million 26.5 per cent.

The comparable figures for the country as a whole show a reduction of 2.5 per cent.
