asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many coal miners were employed in (a) the United Kingdom and (b) Japan in the latest available year.

The numbers employed in coal mining in 1983 in the United Kingdom and Japan respectively were 239,000 and 20,000, including both underground and surface-mining undertakings.
