HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 c384W
Mr. Tony

Banks asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give an assurance that he will not require, as a condition of granting moneys to the British Broadcasting Corporation for the purpose of running the monitoring services at Caver sham, that persons employed there shall relinquish their membership of trade unions.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

It is not our intention to introduce measures similar to those announced on 25 January in respect of GCHQ outside the field of security and intelligence. The BBC monitoring service is not engaged in security and intelligence work.
