HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 c421W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his reply to the right hon. and learned Member for Hexham (Mr. Rippon) on 6 February, Official Report, c. 467, how many petitions he has received in response to his White Paper, Cmnd. 9063; which organisation or group of individuals was responsible for the petitions; how many signatures were appended to each petition; and whether each petition supported or opposed the proposals made in Cmnd. 9063.

Mr. Waldegrave

I have received petitions submitted by the following bodies or groups:

  • The GLC Staff Association
  • Inner London Education Authority
  • Morley college, London
  • Staff of Golders Hill park, London
  • William Ellis school
  • Parents of children attending some ILEA schools
  • NALGO Enfield branch
  • NALGO Tyne and Wear branch

They range in size from around 200 signatures up to a claimed 65,000 signatures.

The petitions are all opposed to the proposals in Cmnd 9063 but they reveal considerable misunderstanding of the effects of the proposals.
