HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 cc362-3W
Mr. Harris

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is now in a position to make a statement on the south-west mackerel box.

Mr. MacGregor

We have been reviewing the conservation and management arrangements for the southwest mackerel fishery in the light of all the available information. Given the catches this season within the mackerel box and the significance of this area as a nursery ground for the western mackerel stock as a whole, we have decided that the fishery should be closed within the box to licenced vessels from midnight on 4 March. Detailed arrangements will be notified to the industry in the usual way. The fishery can remain open elsewhere for the time being, but we will continue to keep the position under review.
