HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 cc381-2W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will initiate discussions in the United Nations Security Council about the current and future role of the United Nations forces in South Lebanon.

Mr. Luce

We have taken an active part in consultations at the United Nations aimed at widening UN involvement in peace keeping in Lebanon. We have supported the proposal for a UN force to be deployed in Beirut, which is still being discussed in the Security Council. Our ideas on other ways in which the United Nations might help restore stability in Lebanon, without the need for a new Security Council mandate, have been widely welcomed.
