asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will activate discussions with the chairman of British Rail with regard to controlling noise and vibration emanating from freight trains in residential areas.

I have no plans to do so, but if there is a particular problem perhaps the hon. Member would care to write to the chairman of British Rail about it in the first instance.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will initiate legislation to place controls on both noise and vibration with regard to freight trains running through built-up residential areas.

Powers to control noise and vibration from railways are already available under part III of the Control of Pollution Act 1974, which is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment.
