§ Sir John Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contribution Her Majesty's Government make to the European Economic Community fund for Namibia.
§ Mr. RaisonThe Community does not have a special fund for Namibia, but assistance has been given to Namibian refugees in southern Africa from the European development fund and the Community budget. One million ecu has been committed to education projects from the European development fund (the United Kingdom share of this expenditure is approximately £100,000) and 5.8 million ecu from the 1982 Community budget has been provided under the food aid, emergency relief and nongovernmental organisation programmes, the United Kingdom share of which is approximately £806,000.
§ Sir John Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contribution Her Majesty's Government make to the Commonwealth programme of training for Namibia; and through what channels the contribution is made.
§ Mr. RaisonThe Commonwealth programme of training for Namibia is funded from the Commonwealth fund for technical cooperation. The United Kingdom pays 30 per cent. of the total income from Commonwealth Governments to the fund. On this basis our contribution was £5.71 million in 1983–84.
Our latest information (1 July 1982—30 June 1983) is that 106 Namibian trainees were being sponsored under the programme costing in all just under £860,000. The notional United Kingdom share of this expenditure is £258,000.
