Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the sources for the production of (a) nitroglycerine, (b) plastic propellant, (c) TNT and (d) RDX (i) in the United Kingdom, by factory, and (ii) abroad, by country.

Mr. Pattie

The sources of production in the United Kingdom for these items are:

  1. (a) Nitro-glycerine: ROF Bishopton; Nobels Explosive Company Limited, Ardeer; and Explosive and Chemical Products Limited, Alfreton, Derbyshire.
  2. (b) Plastic propellant: ROF Bridgwater and Nobels Explosive Company Limited, Ardeer.
  3. (c) TNT: ROF Bridgwater.
  4. (d) RDX: ROF Bridgwater.

Potential overseas sources for nitro-glycerine, TNT, and RDX will include the majority of countries which have an indigenous munitions manufacturing capability. Potential sources for the production of plastic propellants are fewer in number, but are known to include the United States of America and France.
