HC Deb 17 February 1984 vol 54 c331W
Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about delays affecting the rehabilitation of the railway linking Maputo with Zimbabwe.

Mr. Raison

There has been no undue delay. Although £10 million was pledged in 1981 for the general purpose of improving rail communications between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, consultants then had to assess which of several possible schemes we could best support. I agreed a detailed project to upgrade part of the Limpopo line last October. We are ready to start as soon as the Mozambique Government have signed the usual exchange of notes governing the project.
