§ 58. Sir Kenneth Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Defence how many recruits under the youth training scheme have been taken into the services; and whether he will make a statement on the success of this scheme.
§ Mr. LeeSix hundred and fifty-three have been accepted for the ASYTS and 589 have so far been taken into the armed services. About 3,000 applications have been received for some 1,900 places available this financial year. ASYTS trainees are required to meet the normal entry requirements for the armed services because they are required to train and work alongside their regular counterparts and standards are high. Many of those who have entered the scheme have done very well and some have reached impressive standards.
