HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 cc311-3W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many home students were admitted to universities in the United Kingdom in each of the last five years; and what percentage this was of the age group.

Mr. Brooke

The following information relates to all home entrants to full-time undergraduate courses in universities in Great Britain; the age participation rate is the number of such entrants aged under 21 expressed as a percentage of the 18-year-old population. Similar information for universities in Northern Ireland is not readily available.

Initial entrants (thousands) Age participation rate
1978–79 73.5 7.5
1979–80 75.2 7.5
1980–81 76.9 7.5
1981–82 75.1 7.2
1982–83 72.1 6.8

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what was the average cost per student in constant prices for each student in universities over the last five years;

(2) what was the average cost per student on full-time and sandwich courses in higher education institutions in each of the last five years.

Mr. Brooke

Net institutional expenditure per full-time equivalent student in each of the last five years was as follows. For universities the figures relate to institutions in Great Britain funded through the University Grants Committee; for polytechnics and other major establishments of further education to local authority expenditure in England; and for the grant-aided colleges to expenditure by the Department in England.

Because of the change in accounting from academic to financial years in 1980, reliable unit cost figures for 1980–81 and 1981–82 are not available.

Constant prices for universities' costs have been calculated by means of the index of university costs prepared by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals; and for local authority and grant-aided colleges costs from indices derived from local authority returns of price changes.
