asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the value of imported rubber tyres for motor vehicles in 1983 and in each year since 1978; and what was the value of the output and exports of British manufactured rubber tyres.

  1. (1) Figures for overseas trade relate to SITC (R2) Sub-groups 625.1 and 2 and Item 625.59 (part)—new pneumatic tyres for motor cars, `buses and lorries; and new tyre cases and tubeless tyres for agricultural tractors, earthmovers and dumpers. Reconditioned and used tyres are excluded.
  2. (2) Export figures include any re-exports of imported tyres as well as home-produced ones.
  3. (3) Production figures for 1979–80 relate to sales of new rubber tyres for motor vehicles by United Kingdom manufacturers employing 25 or more persons, and those for 1981–83 to sales by United Kingdom manufacturers employing 300 or more persons. The figure for 1980 was the same on both bases.
