HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 cc286-7W
45. Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what premises on Merseyside he is responsible.

Mr. Brittan

My Department is responsible for Her Majesty's prison, Hornby road, Liverpool, and for the associated prison quarters. It also occupies premises in Merton road, Bootle, Derby square, Liverpool and at Liverpool airport which are the primary responsibility of the Property Services Agency of the Department of the Environment.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Merseyside.

Mr. Brittan

In the morning, at the invitation of the Merseyside police authority, I opened the new sub-divisional police station at Stanley road, Liverpool, and visited the leader of the home watch scheme in Vienna street.

In the afternoon I visited the headquarters of the Merseyside probation service and formally opened the Southwood probation hostel. I was pleased to note that the service offers an imaginative range of programmes, enabling the courts to attach to probation orders requirements which make real demands on offenders, but also offer an opportunity for them to develop self-respect and to make reparation to the local community.

In the evening I addressed the Liverpool city bench on a number of matters having a bearing on their work as magistrates.
