HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 cc323-4W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will now publish, for the most recent 12-month period, the total income from charging overseas visitors for National Health Service treatment.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The latest information available centrally relates to the first six months of the scheme to 31 March 1983 and was given in my replies on 16 November 1983 at c. 499–504 and 16 January 1984 at c.137 to the hon. Members for Manchester Central (Mr. Litherland), Crewe and Nantwich (Mrs. Dunwoody) and Holborn and St. Pancras (Mr. Dobson).

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in what circumstances a sponsor can be required to pay fees on behalf of a visitor under the scheme for charging hospital fees to overseas visitors.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Under the regulations, no sponsor can be required to pay the health authority unless he is an employer employing the visitor on a ship, vessel or aircraft in the circumstances set out in the regulations.
