HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 c328W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received from organisations of and for blind people about the provisions of the Health and Social Security Bill; what replies he is sending; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

My right hon. Friend has received a letter from the North Regional Association for the Blind about clause 1 of the Bill and especially the ending of the supply of glasses under the general ophthalmic service. A reply will be sent as soon as possible and will state the Government's conviction that the vast majority of the public will be able to obtain glasses privately at prices comparable to the charges for GOS glasses and that GOS glasses will still be provided for children and those who at present receive full or partial remission of optical charges until it is appropriate to substitute cash grants in place of the supply of a specific range of spectacles.
