§ 26. Mr. Andrew F. Bennettasked the Secretary of State for Defence how much his Department has spent on research over each of the last five years; and how much of this money was spent on funding research in higher education institutions including universities.
§ Mr. LeeI refer the hon. Member to the "Statements on the Defence Estimates", copies of which are in the Library. The totals spent on research are in volume 1—page 11 in the 1983 statement—and the amounts spent with the higher education authorities, including universities, are in volume 2, table 3.2 in the 1983 statement. Updated figures for the last two years' expenditure on research at the universities are: 1982–83, £8 million (outturn); 1983–84 £9 million, the latter figure being an estimate.
