HC Deb 15 February 1984 vol 54 c190W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will list in the Official Report the Acts of Parliament since 1979 which have laid extra duties on police constabularies.

Mr. Hurd

The police have a general duty to enforce the criminal law. Any legislation which has altered the criminal law, created new criminal offences or given powers to the police may therefore have had implications for the work of the police. We look to chief officers of police to deploy their manpower to the best effect.
