HC Deb 15 February 1984 vol 54 c179W
Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action has been taken by the Severn-Trent water authority to identify the source of petrol in the drains in Newcastle-under-Lyme; what was the source; whether a prosecution will be instigated; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

The Staffordshire fire brigade and Severn Trent water authority identified a possible source of an accidental petrol leakage. I understand the petrol loss has now ceased and action has been taken to avoid any further petrol remaining in the ground entering the sewerage system. Any question of prosecution is for the authorities concerned.
