HC Deb 14 February 1984 vol 54 c168W
Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many new jobs have been created in (a) Greenock and (b) Port Glasgow; and how many jobs have been lost in the past 12 months.

Mr. Allan Stewart

Comprehensive information on job gains and losses is not available. In the period since May 1979, however, and for the two areas together, there have been 2,342 new jobs, and 465 safeguarded jobs associated with offers of selective financial assistance. Many other jobs are created without such assistance. Provisional figures show that the number of redundancies involving 10 or more workers notified to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the Greenock arid Port Glasgow jobcentre areas in the 12 months ended January 1984 totalled 2,049 and 103, respectively.
