HC Deb 14 February 1984 vol 54 c143W
40. Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received concerning the proposal of the University Grants Committee to close the pharmacy department at Heriot-Watt university in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

My right hon. Friend has to date received 24 letters from right hon. and hon. Members about the University Grants Committee's recommendation that the pharmacy department at Heriot-Watt university should be closed. The committee's recommendation was made following an inquiry into pharmacy provision by its panel on studies allied to medicine. It took account of manpower needs, of the relative quality of university departments of pharmacy and of the capital cost that would have been involved in moving the department to the university's new site.
