HC Deb 13 February 1984 vol 54 c22W
Mr. Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what recent representations he has received about origin marking of cloth in clothing; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The woollen cloth industry has proposed that garments should bear an indication of the origin of the cloth of which they are made; and that the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) (Miscellaneous Goods) Order 1981 should be extended accordingly. It would be premature to consider this proposal, which would present serious practical difficulties, pending a ruling from the European Court on the compatibility of the order as it stands with Community law.
