Mr. Robert B. Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money in real terms was spent on state secondary schools in Hertfordshire in 1970, 1974, 1979 and 1983.

The figures for the financial years for which consistent information is available are as follows:

These figures concern net institutional recurrent expenditure and they exclude certain other items of expenditure, including the financial costs of capital expenditure, pupil support and meals and milk.

The numbers of pupils in maintained secondary schools (including middle deemed secondary) in Hertfordshire in 1974, 1979 and 1983 were 79,627, 87,243 and 82,673 respectively. Comparable figures for 1970 are not available.
