asked the Secretary of State for Social Services which hospitals in the West Midlands regional health authority are equipped and staffed to carry out heart operations.

Information is not available centrally in precisely the form requested. The following is a list of hospitals in the West Midlands regional health authority with beds in the specialty of thoracic surgery.

  • North Staffordshire Royal infirmary
  • City General hospital, Stoke-on-Trent
  • Queen Elizabeth hospital
  • Birmingham children's hospital
  • East Birmingham hospital
  • Walsgrave hospital
  • The Royal hospital, Wolverhampton

Information is not held centrally on the numbers of beds in other specialties such as general surgery and paediatric surgery to which patients may be admitted for heart operations.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many patients in the west midlands are awaiting heart operations; and what is the longest time any patient has waited;

(2) how many heart operations in the west midlands have been cancelled before the date given to patients; and for what reasons;

(3) how many patients have been sent to other regions because of the shortage of facilities for heart operations in the west midlands.
