HC Deb 13 February 1984 vol 54 cc16-7W
Mr. Neale

asked the Attorney-General how many cases were heard in the Crown courts at Bodmin in each of the years since 1970.

The Attorney-General

Annual figures on Crown court cases heard at Bodmin have been collected only since 1973, and are given in the table following. High Court cases are also heard at Bodmin and figures are available from 1975 onwards. These are also shown in the table.

Crown Court Cases High Court Cases
Year Committals for Trial Committals for Sentence Appeals Total Total*
1981 212 81 57 350 21
1982 210 90 113 413 15
1983 256 50 95 401 11
* Figures related to Queen's Bench and defended divorce cases disposed of after trial.

Mr. Neale

asked the Attorney-General if he will set up a new and full inquiry into the question of transferring the Crown courts from Bodmin to Truro, in view of the fact that the current plan for such a transfer is based on an inquiry carried out 12 years ago.

The Attorney-General

The Lord Chancellor explained the reasons for the transfer in a letter he sent my hon. Friend on 18 January 1984. He is satisfied these reasons justify the decision taken and does not consider any new inquiry would be appropriate.
