HC Deb 13 February 1984 vol 54 c28W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what discussions have taken place with his Department concerning the proposed closure of the Carreras Rothman factory at Basildon.

Mr. Alan Clark

My right hon. Friend discussed the position at a meeting with my hon. Friend the Member for Basildon (Mr. Amess) which was held at my hon. Friend's request. The local jobcentre manager has met the personnel manager at the Basildon plant and, as a result, details of job vacancies in the area will be displayed on the factory's premises from today.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will assess the loss of jobs through the proposed closure of the Carreras Rothmans factory at Basildon.

Mr. Alan Clark

The loss of jobs at Carreras Rothmans factory in Basildon is undoubtedly a setback for employment prospects in the area. The Manpower Services Commission will do all it can to help those workers made redundant find new jobs, and all its advisory, placement and retraining services will be at their disposal.
