HC Deb 10 February 1984 vol 53 cc824-5W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report the information enclosed with the Minister for Health's letter following his reply to the hon. Member for Norfolk, North on 17 November 1983, Official Report, c. 565.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

In sending the following table, I pointed out that the information for the four countries is not exactly comparable because of differences in the way in which health services are organised within them.

Notes:

  1. 1. All figures are derived from the annual accounts for 1982–83 submitted to the relevant central department by authorities administering health services in each country.
  2. 2. Salaries and wages figures for NHS staff include employers' national insurance and superannuation contributions. The costs of non-NHS staff normally include a similar overhead element.
  3. 3. Total current expenditure figures include costs incurred on the provision of all services except payments made to contractors providing family practitioner services. The figures are after the application of direct credits (e.g. staff lodging charges, canteen and sundry sales, etc.) but without deduction of income (e.g. charges to private and other patients in hospitals).
  4. 4. The figures for England include the expenses of the Dental Estimates Board and Prescription Pricing Authority.
  5. 5. The figures for Scotland include the expenditure of the Common Services Agency.
  6. 6. The figures for Wales include the expenses of the Welsh Health Technical Services Organisation.
  7. 7. The figures for Northern Ireland include expenditure on personal social services which are provided by the same authorities as health services, together with expenditure by the Central Services Agency and the Northern Ireland Staffs Council.
