asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the ratio of teaching to non-teaching staff employed by local education authorities; and what has been the ratio of teaching to non-teaching costs, in each year since 1979.

The ratio of full-time equivalent teaching to full-time equivalent non-teaching staff — including those employed in the meals and milk service —employed by local education authorities in England in June of each year since 1979 is as follows:
